Porsche Cayenne: All Generations, Specs & Buyer’s Guide

From the controversial 2003 debut to the 1,139 hp electric flagship — every Cayenne generation, engine, and model year covered in one place.

The Porsche Cayenne launched in 2003 and divided opinion sharply — purists scoffed, accountants rejoiced. By 2007, it was outselling the 911 by more than 50,000 units a year and had single-handedly secured Porsche’s financial independence. Today the Cayenne spans four generations, four body styles, and a power range from 280 hp to 1,139 hp. This guide covers every model year, every engine option, and what to look for when buying used.

  • Driveshaft carrier bearing wear
  • Transfer case and differential seal leaks on higher-mileage examples
  • Air suspension compressor failure (if air suspension optioned)
  • Surface corrosion on undercarriage — inspect thoroughly on older examples
958

2nd Generation Cayenne — 2011–2018

Chassis code E2 (958.1 pre-facelift, 958.2 facelift 2015+). VW Group PL72 platform. Significantly lighter and more refined than Gen 1.

Updated styling front and rear; twin-turbo V6 for S and GTS; new plug-in E-Hybrid system; front-biased torque distribution; manual gearbox removed.

Known Issues — 2nd Gen

  • Generally more reliable than Gen 1; properly maintained examples are very strong
  • Air suspension sensor wear on higher-mileage examples
  • 958.1 V8 S models: check oil consumption — common in early examples

Buying Guide: Which Cayenne is Right for You?

Best Budget Buy

958 (2011–2014) Cayenne S or Turbo — the sweet spot for value. Avoid the very early 955 unless you have budget for potential coolant system work. The 958 V8 S is excellent and parts availability is strong.

Best Performance Buy

9YA Turbo GT (2022+) — 631 hp, 3.1-second 0–60, and still capable of driving on school runs. Alternatively the Turbo S E-Hybrid delivers 670 hp with plug-in efficiency.

Best Daily Driver

3rd Gen E-Hybrid (2021+) — over 30 miles of electric range for commuting, V6 turbocharged power on demand, and the most refined interior Porsche has built. Easy to justify.

What to Avoid

Early 955 examples (2003–2006) with unknown service history. Any car with deferred air suspension maintenance. Hybrid examples without battery health documentation.
