Porsche builds some of the most reliable performance cars on the market — but every model has known weak points. This guide covers the most important reliability issues by model so you can buy and maintain your Porsche with confidence.

Porsche 911 (996–997): IMS Bearing

The Intermediate Shaft (IMS) bearing on M96 and M97 engines (1997–2008) is the most famous Porsche reliability concern. Failure causes catastrophic engine damage — typically a complete rebuild costing £10,000–25,000.

The LN Engineering IMS Retrofit (€600–900 parts) replaces the dual-row bearing with a sealed unit. Combine with RMS (Rear Main Seal) replacement at the same time to avoid double labour.

Porsche 911 (997): Rear Main Seal (RMS) Oil Leak

The crankshaft rear main seal frequently leaks oil onto the clutch on 997 models. Budget £500–1,200 labour. Always do this when the IMS retrofit is performed.

Porsche Cayenne (955/957): Transfer Case and Air Suspension

First and second generation Cayenne (2002–2010) have documented transfer case issues leading to AWD loss. Air suspension compressors and struts also have finite lifespans. Listen for grinding from the centre of the car during acceleration and check all four air corners raise equally.

Porsche Macan (95B): PDK Shudder and Water Pump

Early Macan models (2014–2016) experienced PDK judder at low speeds. Porsche issued software fixes but some required mechatronic replacement. Also watch for: panoramic sunroof rattles (dealer fix), water pump failures on 3.0T engines, and neglected Haldex AWD coupling filter (change every 40,000 km).

Porsche Taycan: Battery Degradation and Software

The 800V battery system shows low degradation under normal use. Key tips: keep charge between 20–80% daily, avoid frequent 150kW+ DC fast charging, and ensure the car is on the latest software (OTA updates have fixed most early infotainment issues). The 12V auxiliary battery can drain if the car sits unused — use a CTEK trickle charger for storage.

Porsche Boxster (987) 2.7L: Bore Scoring

The 2.7L Boxster engine in the 987 generation is prone to bore scoring — cylinder wall damage that causes oil consumption and eventual engine failure. A borescope inspection through the spark plug holes is the only reliable check. Any vertical scoring marks mean the engine needs a rebuild.

Porsche Panamera (970): Air Suspension at High Mileage

First-gen Panamera (2009–2016) air suspension compressors and struts are the most common failure at 120,000+ km. Budget for a full suspension overhaul when buying any high-mileage 970.
