Porsche Communication Management (PCM) is the central brain of every modern Porsche. Through PIWIS coding — the Porsche factory diagnostic and programming tool — it’s possible to activate features that are already in your car’s software but locked from the factory. This guide explains what’s possible and how to get it done safely.
What is PIWIS Coding?
PIWIS (Porsche Integrated Workshop Information System) is Porsche’s proprietary diagnostic, coding, and programming platform. It connects to your Porsche via the OBD-II port and communicates with every control unit in the car. Coding means changing software parameters — enabling features, adjusting behaviour, or configuring the car to your market specification.
Features You Can Unlock via PIWIS Coding
911 (991 / 992)
- Sport Response Button — Activates a 20-second maximum-attack mode. Can be enabled if not factory-fitted.
- PSE Exhaust Always-Open — Force the sport exhaust valve open in Normal mode, not just Sport/Sport+.
- Lap Timer — Available on Sport Chrono-equipped cars but sometimes locked. Coding unlocks it.
- Start-Stop default OFF — Disable Auto Stop-Start as the default setting.
- Sport Chrono Clock backlight — Adjust brightness.
- Rev counter needle sweep at startup — Enable/disable the dramatic needle sweep when you start the car.
Cayenne (9YA / 9YB)
- Dashcam video output — Enable PCM video input for compatible cameras.
- Offroad mode customisation — Adjust ground clearance behaviour in raised mode.
- Lane Change Assist sensitivity — Adjust PDLS+ and LCA thresholds.
- Rear-view camera guidelines — Enable/disable dynamic guidelines.
- Welcome lighting sequence — Customise exterior lighting patterns.
- Sport Response activation — If not factory-fitted.
Taycan
- Range Mode customisation — Adjust regeneration levels and climate behaviour.
- Sport Sound (artificial sound) — Adjust interior e-sound volume and profile.

- Ambient lighting colours — Expand colour range if not fully unlocked.
- Rear wiper auto on rain — Enable rain-triggered rear wiper logic.
Equipment Codes and Factory Options
Before coding, you need to know your car’s factory equipment specification. Every Porsche has an option code list printed on a sticker in the service book or stored in the chassis data. Key codes relevant to coding:
- X73 — Porsche Sport Exhaust (PSE)
- X76 — Sport Chrono Package
- X23 — PDCC Sport (active roll stabilisation)
- X69 — Rear axle steering (4WS)
Coding cannot add hardware that isn’t physically installed — but many software features are tied to option codes that can be enabled if your car already has the relevant hardware.
How to Get PIWIS Coding Done
- Authorised Porsche Centre (OPC) — Can code all features but may charge significant labour rates. Some features they won’t enable as policy.
- Independent Porsche Specialist with PIWIS — Most flexible and cost-effective option. Find a specialist who actively codes Porsches rather than just using the tool for diagnostics.
- Porsche Clubs / Coding Days — Many PCA (Porsche Club of America) and local clubs organise coding days where a specialist does group sessions at reduced cost.
Safe Coding vs Risky Modifications
All coding discussed here falls within what Porsche considers ‘market adaptation’ — changes that adjust the car to different global market standards. This is generally considered reversible and low-risk. What you should avoid:
- Coding that modifies transmission shift points (affects longevity)
- Disabling safety systems (ABS, PSM)
- Coding from unverified online guides not specific to your car’s exact hardware configuration
