Porsche Panamera: All Generations, Specs & Buyer’s Guide

From the divisive 2009 debut to the 771 hp Turbo S E-Hybrid with active suspension that leans into corners — every Panamera generation, engine, and trim covered.

Unveiled atop a Shanghai skyscraper in April 2009, the Panamera was Porsche’s most audacious product launch — a four-door sports car that critics said shouldn’t exist and buyers couldn’t resist. Over 250,000 have been sold across three generations. Today the Panamera stands as one of the fastest four-door saloons ever built, capable of 2.8-second 0–60 times while seating four adults in genuine luxury. This guide covers every variant and generation.

2014 Facelift (970.2)

Revised front and rear styling. V8 NA engines replaced by 3.0L twin-turbo V6 in S variants — more power, better efficiency. E-Hybrid introduces lithium-ion battery with plug-in charging.

Curb Weight

Approximately 3,900–4,400 lbs depending on drivetrain. Turbo S and hybrid models heaviest. Air suspension three-chamber system available; standard on Turbo.

Known Issues — 970

  • Heavy fuel consumption — especially on Turbo variants in urban use; expect 12–15 mpg city
  • PDK fluid changes critical — neglected units develop jerky low-speed behaviour
  • Air suspension component wear — compressor and control arm bushings are wear items at 80,000+ miles
  • Carbon buildup on direct-injection V8 engines — walnut blasting recommended at 60,000 mile intervals
  • Coolant system — inspect expansion tank and thermostat housing on high-mileage turbo models
971

2nd Generation Panamera — 2017–2023

Chassis codes G2/971 (971.1) and 971.2 facelift (2021+). Available as 5-door fastback and Sport Turismo wagon. VW Group MSB platform (shared with Bentley Continental GT). 8-speed PDK standard throughout.

Buying Guide: Which Panamera Generation?

Best Budget Entry

970.2 Panamera S (2014–2016) — the twin-turbo V6 makes 420 hp, rides beautifully, and values have corrected significantly. A well-maintained example with full history is excellent value.

Best All-Rounder

971.2 Panamera 4S or GTS (2021–2023) — the second-generation mid-cycle car has the best blend of technology, reliability data, and performance. Sport Turismo adds practicality without compromise.

Ultimate Performance

976 Turbo S E-Hybrid — 771 hp, 2.8-second 0–60, Active Ride suspension, and digital cockpit. The fastest and most technically advanced saloon Porsche has built.

Practicality Focus

971 Sport Turismo (2017–2023) — a practical shooting brake that doesn’t feel like a compromise. If you need boot space and four seats, the Sport Turismo is an exceptional choice before the 976 discontinued it.
